Pōdex® and Toenail Bracing: How Do They Compare?
Toenail bracing and nail lifting gels are two non-invasive approaches used for suitable curved, involuted or ingrown toenails.
They work differently. A toenail brace is usually attached to the nail to apply corrective force over time. Pōdex® uses a transparent, UV/LED-cured 3-step gel system that creates controlled lifting tension across the nail.
The right choice depends on the nail, the severity of the curvature and the judgement of the person providing the treatment.
What Is Toenail Bracing?
Toenail bracing, also known as orthonyxia, uses a device attached to the surface of the nail. Braces may be made from wire, composite material, adhesive strips or other systems.
A practitioner may choose a brace when the nail needs targeted correction or longer-term professional monitoring.
Bracing has been studied as a conservative treatment for ingrown toenails, although results vary with the type of brace, the condition of the nail and the skill of the practitioner.
How Is Pōdex® Different?
Pōdex® does not use a wire or visible fixed device. Its three stages perform separate functions:
- PREP prepares the nail surface for adhesion.
- LIFT creates the lifting effect.
- SEAL stabilises and protects the completed application.
Once cured, the application is transparent and low profile. This may appeal to customers who prefer a discreet finish or do not want a visible brace.
Pōdex® is not automatically better or more suitable than bracing. Some nails require a different or stronger correction method.
Is Pōdex® an Alternative to a Toenail Brace?
For a suitable nail, Pōdex® may offer a non-invasive alternative to a conventional brace. A professional should assess:
- how tightly the nail is curved
- nail thickness and flexibility
- discomfort at the nail edges
- the condition of the surrounding skin
- previous treatment
- whether there are signs of infection
Severely curved, thick or complicated nails may require another form of professional treatment.
Can Pōdex® Be Used Before or After Bracing?
Pōdex® has not been presented here as a clinically proven method of preventing recurrence or preserving the result of a brace.
A trained practitioner may nevertheless review it as a separate nail lifting option at another stage of the person’s care. For example, someone who has completed bracing may ask whether Pōdex® is suitable for the nail once the brace has been removed.
The professional should assess the nail again rather than assuming that a system suitable at one stage will be suitable at another.
Pōdex® should not be placed over a brace unless the practitioner and the relevant manufacturers have confirmed that the two systems are compatible.
Can It Be Used After Ingrown Toenail Surgery?
Pōdex® is not a wound-care or surgical aftercare product.
It must not be applied while the toe is open, inflamed, infected, bleeding or still healing. After surgery, follow the treating practitioner’s wound-care instructions.
Once the area has completely healed, the treating professional can assess whether the remaining or regrowing nail is suitable for any further nail correction product.
Which Option Is More Discreet?
Pōdex® cures to a transparent finish and does not leave a visible wire or strip across the nail.
Some bracing systems are also designed to be unobtrusive, so appearance will vary. Suitability and safety should take priority over appearance.
How Long Does a Pōdex® Application Last?
Wear time varies according to nail preparation, nail growth, footwear, pressure and how well the application remains attached.
For more detail, read how long each Pōdex® application lasts in our FAQs.
A damaged, lifting or cracked application should be reviewed rather than repeatedly covered with additional product.
What If the Nail Feels Tight?
Some lifting tension is expected because that is how the system acts on the nail. Pain or increasing discomfort should not be ignored.

Can I Take Pōdex® to My Existing Bracing Specialist?
Yes. A practitioner who already knows your nail history may be well placed to review the system.
Purchase should still be discussed with the clinic first. The practitioner may decide that Pōdex® is suitable, that bracing remains the better option, or that another approach is required.

Choosing the Right Nail Correction Method
Pōdex® and toenail braces should not be treated as interchangeable products for every nail.
Pōdex® offers a transparent gel-based lifting option. Bracing offers a range of device-based correction methods. A professional assessment can help determine which approach best fits the condition of the nail.
