Why ingrown toenails are common in older adults

As we age, toenails naturally become thicker, harder, and more curved. Reduced circulation, slower nail growth, arthritis, and difficulty trimming nails all contribute to nails pressing inward into the surrounding skin. This often leads to pain, swelling, redness, and repeated infections.

In the elderly, even a small amount of nail pressure can cause significant discomfort and make walking difficult reducing mobility.

Why traditional treatments are often not ideal

Many standard treatments involve:

  • Cutting or removing part of the nail

  • Using rigid metal braces

  • Repeated salon or clinic visits

These approaches can be uncomfortable and are not always suitable for older adults with sensitive skin.

A gentle, non-invasive alternative

Modern nail-lifting and straightening systems such as Pōdex™ are designed to gently reduce inward nail pressure by supporting a healthier nail shape as it grows. The system uses an invisible, transparent gel applied to the nail surface and cured under UV/LED light to encourage a more natural, comfortable growth direction.

This approach avoids cutting, surgery, or painful tools.

Important notice
People with diabetes, circulation issues, nerve damage, or skin infections should consult a healthcare professional before using any nail-correction system.
